An environmentalist and political scientist from Maine named john Rensenbrink co-founded the American Green Party. He has passed away. His age was 93. According to the national Green Party, Rensenbrink of Topsham passed away in a hospice while being cared for by his family.

According to an obituary in the Bangor Daily News, Rensenbrink passed away on July 30 due to sickness.

At the age of 14, Rensenbrink made his first venture into politics by writing a letter to the editor endorsing Harold Stassen, the governor of Minnesota. The Minneapolis Star Journal published the correspondence. It was the first of numerous letters to the editor that would appear in that publication over the following few years. Rensenbrink took involved in an effective campaign to remove Grand Rapids’ mayor while still a student.

 He soon joined the Young Republicans at the University of Michigan in 1951–1952, but soon grew tired of Joe McCarthy’s politics. The year 1984 proved to be pivotal for Rensenbrink. He had heard about the election of Green Party candidates in what was then West Germany when he was in Poland the previous year. In the national Parliament, they had gained 27 seats. Rensenbrink made stops in Munich and Frankfurt that summer on his way back to the United States to see friends who had joined the German Green Party and were celebrating their surprise parliamentary win.

In the years 1966–1967, Rensenbrink worked to establish Merrymeeting Community Action (MCA) in mid-coast Maine. The first successfully financed anti-poverty program in Maine was created and written for MCA by Rensenbrink and Professor Paul Hazelton of the education department at Bowdoin College. Rensenbrink also served on MCA’s board of directors for a number of years.

Together with New Jersey Green Party co-editor Steve Welzer, Rensenbrink serves as the publication’s chief editor. The foundation also publishes books and runs the website

After their father’s unexpected passing in 1943, the dairy farm was run by John Rensenbrink and his brother Henry. Rensenbrink, who was unable to finish high school, enrolled in a correspondence program offered by the American School in Chicago.

In order to attend Calvin College, an Evangelical university in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he left the farm in 1946; his mother and siblings followed him there the next year. Rensenbrink was Calvin’s editor of the college newspaper during his junior and senior years while also majoring in history, English, and philosophy.

He earned a BA from Calvin in 1950. After enrolling at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he studied political philosophy in particular, he graduated with a master’s in political science in 1951. Then, from 1951 to 1952, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the University of Amsterdam.

After that, he focused his studies on political philosophy, American politics, and constitutional law at the University of Chicago, where he earned his Ph.D. in political science in 1956. The title of his doctoral dissertation was “Technology and Utopia: The Structure of Freedom.”
